last night we travelled over to Ullingham to give a talk on Beautiful Borders. This was the last talk ever and pleased to say. The decision was made late last year due to the fact that it really is too much for us oldies to go out and give a presentation after having done a day’s work at the nursery. Most groups are lively and friendly but there are some (who shall remain nameless) who are the complete opposite. Maybe they are short on ‘people’ skills but there’s nothing worse than driving 30, 40 or more miles to a group who are like lumps of concrete and basically have little enthusiasm for welcoming their spaeker for the evening. Fortunately the group last night were in the friendly welcoming category and they bought quite a few palnts from us so it was a good night. There is now a real sense of relief knowing that we won’t be doing it again.

I’m still doing them. It seems some speakers are charging a few hundred a talk. Not sure many societies can afford that. But on the other hand, it’s a skill and knowledge base that we have, and they don’t. Not to mention ongoing price hikes in fuel

There is a trend towards a captive audience event for those who have nurseries/sites to hold it. Talks and work-shops. If you could get the punters in, it would be useful. Sell a few plants too I would think. I’d do a slot on it if you wanted to do one..Every little helps!
