I had a brief splashy walk round the garden today which didn’t exactly lift my spirits. Its so very water-logged and I wonder how many plants will simply rot away. There’s no chance of doing any work because its so wet and would make more mess rather than accomplishing anything. The only things in flower are Viburnum bodnantense ‘Dawn’ and V. ‘Nanum’. The latter is such a good shrub, it was planted 10 or 12 years ago and is about 1 metre in height and breadth, it reliably flowers all through the winter and needs almost no maintenance. The only other plant with flowers on is Geranium ‘Bill Wallis’, not quite the normal flowering time but pleasing to see anyway. There are plenty of buds on the quince promising some good colour in the next few weeks. Salix daphnoides has a few silver catkins on already but on a grey day like today they just don’t show up at all.
